Drainage Mats & Vegetation Carriers for green roof systems
at Punggol housing estate

Green roof system brings a greener quiter world to Singapore's children

As part of a bold, garden city transformation, Singapore’s Housing & Development Board wanted to retrofit a green roof to a daycare centre in the Punggol housing estate. However, the steep slopes, multiple gradients, difficult access and location – atop a six-storey car park – presented numerous installation and maintenance issues. Meanwhile the structural loading of the metal roof itself meant it would struggle to support the weight of a standard green roof system.

THE CHALLENGE

As part of a bold, garden city transformation, Singapore’s Housing & Development Board wanted to retrofit a green roof to a daycare center in the Punggol housing estate. However, the steep slopes, multiple gradients, difficult access, and location – atop a six-story car park – presented numerous installation and maintenance issues. Meanwhile, the structural loading of the metal roof itself meant it would struggle to support the weight of a standard green roof system. The structural loading hence ruled out standard solutions.

THE ENKA SOLUTION

The combination of the ultra-light, easy-to-install & maintain pre-vegetated mats and water retention fleece is outstandingly lightweight, even when fully saturated. It solved the project’s challenges. The roll format enables it to be quickly laid – even around complex contours – and easily retracted for inspections and repairs. The use of locally grown, low-profile tropical plants makes our pre-vegetated mats heat, drought-resistant, and easy to maintain.

INSTALLATION BENEFITS & RESULTS

The solution helped the HDB achieve its goals of lowering the center’s interior temperature, reducing air conditioning use, and cutting noise levels for the children. In addition, the ‘instant green’ effect improved the view for neighboring homes, with a wide mix of plants providing interest throughout the year. It also reduced reflective glare. Finally, the minimal maintenance inherent in the green roof system has made it the ideal candidate for Singapore’s ambition to ‘green’ its existing housing stock.

Additional benefits include:

  • The pre-vegetated mat, installed over a water retention fleece, weighs only 50 kg/m2 when fully saturated.
  • The green roof components help create one of the lightest weight systems on the market. In addition, the green roof system can be fitted where competing products would be too heavy.
  • All components are in a rolled format. Therefore, they can be easily rolled out and secured on sloped roofs and around complex shapes.
  • Installation is simple as there is no loose growing medium.
  • Their variety ensures visual interest throughout every season and enhances diversity.
